Another Vancouver Island school district is cancelling international field trips over the upcoming Spring Break.

In a letter to parents and guardians of Saanich Schol District (SD63)v students, superintendent Dave Eberwein said, “After careful consideration, we have decided to cancel Saanich School District international field trips planned for Japan and Europe due to the possible elevated risk for students and staff travelling in these regions.”

The Greater Victoria, Sooke and Comox Valley School Districts already announced plans to cancel school trips, all scheduled over the Spring Break, which runs two weeks starting March 16.

In its update Monday, SD63 says it is asking parents and staff who are planning personal overseas travel over the break to consider the need to be quarantined upon returning to Canada.

Island Health is recommending travellers coming home from Iran, China and Italy to self-quarantine for 14 days.

SD63 says it is working closely and taking direction from the B.C. Ministry of Health and Island Health.

The district referred to updated warnings to avoid non-essential travel to Iran, Northern Italy and areas of South Korea.

SD63 says it is aware of school closures in Japan and Italy and restrictions of public gatherings in France.
