A security camera at Budget Brake & Muffler Auto Centre captured a high-speed motor vehicle collision involving at least three vehicles at the intersection of Douglas and Bay at approximately 12:15 a.m. Saturday morning.
“I knew that I would have video coverage so I came down to help the police and give them a copy to see what happened. The white ranger ran the red light hitting three vehicles and fled the scene,” Ryan Burghardt, Budget Brake & Muffler Auto Centre owner, said.
The dramatic footage shows a near-miss for a cyclist travelling northbound along Douglas, when a truck travelling east along Bay appears to run a red light and collides with other vehicles travelling northbound. The cyclist narrowly escapes and appears unharmed.
BC Emergency Health Services spokesperson Caeli Turner confirms a 9-1-1 call was received at 12:15 a.m., and ambulances arrived by 12:17 a.m.
Three people were treated on scene and transported to hospital in stable condition.
UPDATE August 24 2:30pm: VicPD say that the collision at Douglas and Bay followed a driver failing to stop for officers at Gorge Road and Rock Bay Avenue, and fleeing at high speed. The driver then fled on foot from the scene, and officers arrested a suspect nearby. The Independent Investigation Office has been notified.
