A boat carrying six passengers off the coast of Bella Bella capsized late Friday morning, and one person remains missing this weekend.

The boat called in a mayday emergency at approximately 10 a.m., with high waves coming over the sides. Not long after the boat capsized, with five passengers wearing life jackets able to swim to shore. All five did not require medical attention.

A sixth passenger was not wearing a life jacket and did not swim back with the others.

An air sea rescue team under the command of Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre (JRCC) Victoria saw numerous vessels including the Bella Bella Coast Guard Cape Farewell and Captain Goddard. Aubrey Hachey, a Rescue Officer with JRCC, says the rescue team searched the area for the sixth passenger until dusk on Friday night.

The case has now been handed over to the Bella Bella RCMP as a missing persons investigation.

No information about the individuals involved or their vessel has been released at this time.
