B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will be reopening a second lane on the Malahat over the long weekend to accommodate heavy traffic.

The second northbound lane will be open on Aug 3. to the end of the day on Aug. 8. The lane will also be open from Fridays through Sundays for the rest of August.

According to the ministry, higher volumes of traffic are expected due to the long weekend and the Sunfest Country Music Festival in the Cowichan Valey.

Traffic will also not be stopped for Malahat safety improvement project construction from noon on Aug. 3 to Aug. 8.

The increase in traffic is still expected to create delays on Highway 1 between Victoria and Duncan. Drivers are asked to pay close attention to the cones that will be marking new temporary lanes, and watch for changing traffic patterns.

The speed in construction zones is 60 kilometres per hour and is in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
