Saanich police say they are investigating after several dozen firearm parts were found in a dumpster Monday night.

Police say two people from the Regina Park encampment came across the gun parts in a garbage bin in the 3300-block of Douglas Street, near the Galloping Goose Trail around 9 p.m.

A camp leader helped turn over the items to police.

Investigators say the parts were seized from a Saanich storage locker after a search warrant in the 3900-block of Quadra Street in Jan. 2017.

Officers learned the owner of the nearly 100 firearm parts had no criminal history, held a valid firearms license, was in lawful possession of the parts and had not committed any criminal offence.

Police say the following month, the parts were returned to the owner who was 20-years-old at the time and from Victoria.

The items recovered were in the same sealed bags from when they were returned to the owner and officers are contacting the individual to determine how the parts ended up in a dumpster.
