A 38-year-old woman is dead after an apparent drowning at Morningside Beach in Nanaimo.

At around 12:30 p.m., police and paramedics were called to the beach, located off Hammond Bay Road near Neck Point in north Nanaimo, for a report of a drowning involving a woman.

Once Nanaimo RCMP and B.C. paramedics arrived, they were met by a family member. He told them the woman had been swimming and at one point, disappeared below the surface. She resurfaced a short time later and appeared to be unconscious.

The family member swam out to her and brought her back to shore with assistance from Nanaimo firefighters. The firefighters started CPR until paramedics arrived at the beach. The woman was later pronounced deceased.

The BC Coroners Service said they are investigating the sudden, unexpected death.

Family members in Nanaimo and elsewhere have been notified about the woman’s death and are being assisted by Nanaimo RCMP Victim Service. Police said since there was no criminality involved, the investigation has been turned over to the BC Coroners Service. The woman’s name has not been released by police.

Andy Watson, BC Coroners Service spokesperson, has confirmed they are investigating the woman’s death.
