Road to Recovery: Celebrating our workers on Labour Day weekend

CHEK

In this week’s segment of Road to Recovery with Douglas Magazine, CHEK’s Hannah Lepine chats with Darlene Rotchford, the president of the Victoria Labour Council.

Labour Day has been an official holiday in Canada since 1894 and has its roots in Union parades and rallies in Toronto and Ottawa celebrating the successful 1872 Toronto printers’ strike – the original “fight for fairness” that led to the decriminalization of unions in Canada.

The Victoria Labour Council is the local organization of the Canadian Labour Congress at a local level.

Every Labour Day they celebrate workers and their contributions to our communities and to our economy. The Labour Council works alongside progressive governments, improving the lives of all workers through universal social programs and income support.

In this segment, Darlene talks about how the local council supports its members, how unions affect our local economy, and how many were challenged during the pandemic.
