Referendum results see Salt Spring Islanders vote against incorporation

Referendum results means Salt Spring Island will not become a municipality

Preliminary results released tonight show a majority of people on Salt Spring Island want to continue being represented solely by Islands Trust.

3930 voted no while 2419 voted yes. That works out to 61.9% of those who cast as ballot that voted against.

Elections BC was not exactly sure how many eligible voters there were, because of newly registered voters.

The population of Salt Spring Island is close to 11,000 people.

The polling stations closed at 8 o’clock Saturday night.
