Port Hardy RCMP said a call regarding a possible impaired motorist and led to them impounding vehicle, seizing more than $20,000 in cash.

Police seized thousands of dollars in cash following a traffic stop in Port Hardy.

Port Hardy RCMP said in a press release that on May 12 they received a complaint about a possible impaired motorist driving an older model Ford pickup truck.

An officer located the pickup truck, pulled it over, and after speaking with the male driver, confirmed that he was “impaired by alcohol,” the release said.

During the traffic stop, Port Hardy RCMP say another officer arrived on the scene, began speaking to the passenger, and noticed drug paraphernalia as well as suspected drugs in the truck.

The truck was eventually impounded, with the male driver losing his licence for 90 days. Police then obtained a search warrant and discovered “evidence consistent with drug trafficking” and over $20,000 in cash.

This goes to show how much the public can help just by contacting us when something doesn’t seem right said Port Hardy RCMP acting detachment commander Cpl. Chris Voller. When those little hairs on the back of your neck stand up, it’s usually for a good reason. You could prevent a drunk driving tragedy, or help us take drugs and cash out of the hands of known drug traffickers.
