United Way announces funding for local charities on Vancouver Island

United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island has announced a total of $904,527 in federal funding for charities providing support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island (UWCNVI) has received federal funding through the Government of Canada and United Way Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF) to provide financial support to charities adapting their frontline services during the pandemic.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the ECSF, a total of $350 million nationwide, on April 21, 2020.

The ECSF is being administered in collaboration with United Way Centraide Canada, Community Foundations of Canada and the Canadian Red Cross.

On Tuesday, United Way announced the following funding allocations:

Comox area

  • $76,527 for local social service agencies in the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District
  • $153,000 for local social service agencies in the Comox Valley Regional District area

“Local charities have been greatly burdened with increased demand from our most vulnerable community members during this time of COVID-19 and the assistance of the UWCNVI in partnership with the federal government is greatly appreciated,” Gord Johns, MP for Courtenay-Alberni, said in a statement.

Nanaimo area

  • $360,000 for local social service agencies in the Nanaimo Regional District

“Organizations doing critical work with vulnerable people in central and northern Vancouver Island communities are well-positioned to understand where the greatest needs are in the midst of this public health crisis,” Nanaimo-Ladysmith MP Paul Manly said in a statement.

“This funding will assist them to adapt to new service delivery protocols and meet increased service needs. These are very challenging times for front line agencies, I want to personally acknowledge them, and thank them for their efforts.”

Northern Vancouver Island

  • $99,000 for local social service agencies in the Strathcona Regional District
  • $27,000 for local social service agencies in the Regional District of Mount Waddington

A total of $904,527 will be distributed across theUWCNVI’s region, from the Malahat to Port Hardy.

Charitable organizations that are working to provide immediate essential services to those impacted by COVID-19 within the central and northern Vancouver Island region can apply for funds through grants.

The application process and further details can be found at uwcnvi.ca. Applications open May 19, 2020, and close at 12 p.m. on June 15, 2020.

A maximum grant allocation per successful applicant differs by region.

The funding was divided utilizing Statistics Canada’s population data for Regional Districts.

Nanaimo Regional District 

  • Funding: $360,000
  • Maximum Grant Allocation: $50,000

Cowichan Valley Regional District   

  • Funding: $189,000
  • Maximum Grant Allocation: $20,000

Comox Valley Regional District 

  • Funding: $153,000
  • Maximum Grant Allocation: $20,000

Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District

  • Funding: $76,527
  • Maximum Grant Allocation: $10,000

Regional District of Mount Waddington 

  • Funding: $27,000
  • Maximum Grant Allocation: $5,000

Strathcona Regional District

  • Funding: $99,000
  • Maximum Grant Allocation: $10,000
