Police tape surrounds an apartment complex in Courtenay Thursday following a shooting incident.

Comox Valley RCMP says a man suffering from a gunshot wound in Courtenay is in stable condition and the search continues to find a suspect.

In a release Friday morning, the RCMP says officers responded at 5:50 a.m. Thursday morning to a report of gunfire in the 1900-block of Fitzgerald Avenue, where they located the 32-year-old victim, who was rushed to a local hospital by ambulance.

The victim is known to police, according to the Comox Valley RCMP release.

Police say no arrests have been made, but witnesses described seeing two vehicles leave the area before officers arrived.

One of the vehicles is described by police as a blue or teal coloured four-door Mazda and the other is a white Chevrolet pickup truck with no canopy.

RCMP say information gathered so far suggests the attack was not random.

“The person responsible for this brazen act of violence needs to be held accountable and our investigators are committed to making that happen,” Comox Valley RCMP Insp. Mike Kurvers said in a statement.

Major Crime Unit members returned to the scene Thursday night to gather evidence, and the investigation continues.

The Integrated Forensic Identification Section and Police Dog Services are also providing assistance.
