Saanich police are now investigating five suspicious fires at Frank Hobbs Elementary.

Police say the fires occurred over the last seven weeks, two of which were on Monday afternoon.

One was in a garbage bin and the other was under the stairs to a portable classroom, and crews on scene told CHEK News that both appear to be “highly suspicious.”

The others occurred on May 17, sometime between May 19-21, June 18 and June 25.

In a release, police say “although the fires were contained to a small area, the hot and dry weather conditions could have caused these fires to spread to nearby structures.”

It adds only minimal property damage was reported and all fires occurred outside of regular school hours.

Saanich police major crimes unit is asking residents to be on the lookout for and immediately report any fires or suspicious activity.

Anyone with information on this string of fires is asked to contact Saanich police.
