The Saanich Fire Department responded to two fires at Frank Hobbs Elementary that have been deemed suspicious.

Crews were called to the school Monday afternoon after the fires broke out.

One was in a garbage bin and the other was under the stairs to a portable classroom, and crews on scene told CHEK News that both appear to be “highly suspicious.”

In a statement, Saanich Police said officers are currently investigating.

“Our officers are working collaboratively with Saanich Fire investigators as well as property representatives and the public, to determine if additional evidence or persons involved may be located,” the statement reads.

Police said there doesn’t appear to be any damage to the elementary school building itself.

Officers are asking residents to come forward with any information or video footage that may benefit investigators.

Fire crews said this is the latest in a rash of fires in the Gordon Head area, including at Gyro Park where a swing was deliberately set on fire Sunday night.

Residents are being encouraged to report anything suspicious in the area.
