Hornby Island Community School was heavily damaged in a fire on Aug. 26.

Investigators have confirmed a fire at Hornby Island School and Community Centre is suspicious and a person of interest has been identified in connection to the Sunday morning blaze.

Comox Valley RCMP says investigators have been trying to determine what caused the fire and confirm it is suspicious in nature.

Police are asking for assistance from anyone who has information about the fire.

The Hornby Island Community School sustained extensive damage after flames broke out at around 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

The fire gutted classrooms and the gymnasium, and the building is now considered unsafe.

The Comox Valley School District said students enrolled at the Hornby Island Community School will start the new learning year on time at an outdoor education centre.

“If you have not spoken with police and you saw anything suspicious before, during or after the fire, please call us,” Comox Valley RCMP Cst. Monika Terragni said in a release.

If you wish to stay anonymous with information, you can call Crime Stoppers.
