Hornby Island Community School was heavily damaged in a fire on Aug. 26.

The Comox Valley School District said students enrolled at the Hornby Island Community School, which was heavily damaged in a fire on Sunday, will start the school year on time at an outdoor education centre.

On Wednesday, the district announced the all the students enrolled in kindergarten through Grade 8 will attend a three-day education program at the Tribune Bay Outdoor Education Centre, starting on Sept. 4.

The Hornby Island Community School sustained extensive damage after a fire that broke out at around 2 a.m. Sunday morning. The fire gutted classrooms and the gymnasium, and the building is now considered unsafe.

A temporary location for classes in the 2018/19 school year is still being discussed with parents and the community. The district said long-term solutions for replacing or repairing the school are still uncertain and dependent upon the final status of the current building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
