Police continue to investigate fatal crash on Highway 4 west of Whiskey Creek

Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services said they are working to determine the cause of a fatal crash on Highway 4 on Friday involving three vehicles.

At around 12:10 p.m. on March 22, Oceanside RCMP and BC Emergency Health Services were called to a fatal crash on Highway 4 near Koen Road, west of Whiskey Creek, Coombs and Qualicum Beach.

According to RCMP, when officers arrived, they determined a Honda going east crossed the centre lane into a westbound passing lane and collided head-on with a Dodge pickup truck going west. The pickup truck lost control, rolled and came to a rest on its roof in the ditch. The Honda then collided with a second vehicle going west.

The driver of the pickup truck died at the scene. He was a man in his 70s from the area. His name has not been released.

The other drivers and passengers sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Highway 4 was closed for several hours as police investigated. Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services (CVITS), Vancouver Island Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and the BC Coroners’ Service are still working to determine the cause of the collision.
