WATCH: The day after a fatal crash on the Nanaimo Parkway officials are now investigating after a motorcycle driver died last night. Police say a fire on the side of the highway distracted drivers, and ultimately contributed to the crash. Kendall Hanson reports.

A motorcycle involved crash on the Nanaimo Parkway Friday night has claimed the life of one young man.

First responders got the call shortly after 10 p.m. to the section of road between Mostar and Aulds Roads.

The crash took place in the southbound lanes at the same time there was a fire on the northbound side of the highway.

Cst. Gary O’Brien with Nanaimo RCMP says it appears southbound traffic was slowing to look at the fire, on the opposite side of the parkway, when the motorcycle rider slammed into an SUV in front of him.

The motorcycle driver died at the scene.

The Nanaimo Parkway was closed for an hour before northbound traffic resumed. Southbound lanes of the Nanaimo Parkway were closed for close to six hours while the RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service worked on their investigations.
