Island Health has added Alexander Elementary School, located on Beverly Street, to its COVID-19 exposure list.

A North Cowichan elementary school has experienced an exposure to the novel coronavirus.

Over the past 24 hours, Island Health has added Alexander Elementary School to its COVID-19 exposure list.

The health authority says the potential exposure occurred on April 6.

The addition makes Alexander Elementary the 20th school on Vancouver Island and the second school in the Cowichan Valley to be placed on the exposure list in the past few weeks, following the end of spring break. Nearby Drinkwater Elementary was recently added to the list after reporting potential exposures, which occurred on April 6, 7 and 8.

An exposure is defined by Island Health as a single person with a lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection who attended school during their infectious period.

Island Health says if student or parent does not receive a phone call or letter from public health, they should continue to attend school.

Alexander Elementary is located on Beverly Street, near the Duncan border.
