Emergency crews responded to an overturned kayak in the Nanaimo River, but weren’t able to find an occupant.

Around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, the kayak was spotted around some logs in the Nanaimo River near the Nanaimo River Park, with the closest access road being Emblem Road, off Thatcher Road.

Police, Cranberry Volunteer Fire Department crews, emergency health services, and a medical helicopter attended to try and find the kayaker.

Police and ambulance crews searched the shore and the fire department used a vessel to search the water and check a nearby log boom. No one was found in the search.

“At this time, our detachment has not received any reports of overdue or missing persons. Investigators have also checked in with nearby police jurisdictions with similar results.” said Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

The kayak is a one-person bright green plastic Pelican.

Anyone who recognizes the kayak or has information relating to the search, is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2022-17416.
