Nearly 10,000 without power resulting from substation fault near Courtenay

A major power outage is currently affecting residents in the areas surrounding Courtenay and BC Hydro is attributing it to a substation fault.

A major power outage is currently affecting residents in the areas surrounding Courtenay and BC Hydro is attributing it to a substation fault.

At around 12:00 p.m. on Friday morning, BC Hydro indicated over social media that multiple crews had been deployed and were on their way to a handful of outages.

Listed on the power provider’s website are five separate outage source locations.

Each of these outages are in connection with a substation fault.

According to BC Hydro, the total number of customers affected by the fault is 9,877.

The outages blanket the surrounding areas of Courtenay and Comox, affecting communities as far north as Merville, Williams Beach and Black Creek.

BC Hydro is estimating crews will arrive in the area by early Friday afternoon.

At this time, BC Hydro hasn’t indicated what may have caused the substation fault.
