Madison Ayou told her fellow students at an assembly at Aspengrove School in Nanaimo that she loves her long, red hair.

But the 11-year-old announced to her classmates that she will have at least eight inches cut for a donation to Wigs for Kids, B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation March 12 in front of her peers.

“I have met many sick people in my life. Those with cancer and other diseases,” Madison said at the assembly.

“No child should have to experience as many deaths as I have and no parent should have to feel the pain of losing a child.”

Madison is also trying to raise $5,000 for B.C. Children’s Hospital, and her mother says more than $3200 has been raised including cash donations.

Karen Ayou said her daughter has always had long hair, and although it is a difficult decision to snip it off next month, it’s something Madison has thought about doing since she was six.

“I think it’s great, we’re very proud. It’s really hard for her, she’s already had a few tears about cutting her hair,” Ayou said.

“She’s also worried about not reaching her goal, but we’re very proud.”

Ayou said her daughter was at a birthday party recently that was attended by Deeya Sharma.

Deeya inspired Madison by sharing her campaign story to cut her hair and raise donations to B.C. Children’s Hospital in November.

Deeya raised $7,200 and her younger twin sisters Leeya and Leena also donated their hair.

Ayou says the person that cuts Madison’s hair March 12 will be a member of Aspengrove School who has already lived with cancer.
