An air quality advisory has been issued for Port Alberni because of high concentrations of fine particulate matter. An open burning ban is in effect within 15 kilometres of Port Alberni.

High amounts of fine particulate matter have caused Island Health and the environment ministry to issue an air quality advisory for Port Alberni.

An open burning restriction is also in place for the Alberni Valley within 15 kilometres of the city for the next three days.

In a statement, the ministry and health district said high concentrations of particulates are expected to persist until weather conditions change.

Anyone with chronic medical conditions is advised to not participate in strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted.

Exposure is of high concern for infants, the elderly and people with diabetes, lung or heart disease.

With the burning ban, no new fires can be started and no added materials can be added to an existing fire.
