One person in custody after fatal Nanaimo shooting at the Howard Johnson Hotel

One person is dead and another is in custody after an early morning shooting in South Nanaimo.

It happened at the Howard Johnson Hotel but RCMP are saying very little about what transpired.

“The Nanaimo RCMP is continuing with the investigation and more details will be released when available,” Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP said in a media release.

Tape on the floor of the lobby in the outline of a body could be seen through the window.

A hotel manager says the shooting victim and alleged shooter were not guests at the hotel.

The front desk clerk called 911.

The area was cordoned off as forensic investigators spent the morning gathering evidence.

Witnesses say police had a tow company remove a car with Alberta plates from the parking lot but it’s not yet clear how the car is connected to the slaying.

RCMP say an adult male was taken into custody without incident.

Police aren’t saying anything about a possible motive.

No word yet on any charges.
