A 23-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of a Victoria woman in Nanaimo in 2022.

On Tuesday, the court heard that then-21-year-old Simon Baker had told his grandparents that he was going outside to have a smoke on the night of the murder on June 20, 2022.

Soon after, his grandma says she heard a woman shrieking and hollering.

Baker went back inside to say there was a woman covered in blood.

His grandfather called 911, but the woman died shortly after paramedics arrived.

‘Kind-hearted soul’

Autopsy results found that 41-year-old Denise Allick had been stabbed six times.

There was no known connection between Allick and Baker, who was said to be struggling with addiction and mental health issues.

Last year, friends of Allick told CHEK News that she was a “kind-hearted soul” who was good to her friends and was a caring mother to her 12-year-old son.

“That boy was her pride and joy. She loved being a mom,” said Nathan Moss, Allick’s best friend, on June 30, 2022.

“She loved that boy like nothing else. Denise would never leave her son,” he said.

Another friend, Denise Marie Stark, said Allick – who worked as a full-time nurse in Victoria – was a devoted sister and daughter.

“She touched the lives of so many,” Mark said.

A hearing later this week will determine whether or not Baker is criminally responsible for Allick’s death due to a mental disorder.
