Denise Allick’s smile could light up a room.

“She was such a kind-hearted soul that would do anything to make sure you were okay. She gave the best hugs. I will miss seeing her,” said friend Margaret DeGirolamo.

“She touched the lives of so many,” said friend Denise Marie Stark, adding that Allick was also a mother, sister and daughter.

Sadly, the 40-year-old Victoria woman was found murdered at a home in Nanaimo at around 10 p.m. on June 20 after RCMP were called for reports of a disturbance.

Simon Baker, a 21-year-old man from Nanaimo, has been charged with second-degree murder in her death.

It remains unclear how the two knew each other or why Allick was at the Nanaimo home.

“We don’t know why Ms. Allick was there, we don’t know why she was in Nanaimo. We don’t know if they knew each other,” Const. Sherri Wade of the RCMP told CHEK News Wednesday.

RCMP refused to update their investigation Thursday nor would they answer any questions about whether there was anyone else at the property at the time or how Allick was killed. However, Baker’s lawyer confirmed that the home belongs to his client’s relatives.

Baker has been transferred to Wilkinson Road jail in Greater Victoria and his lawyer says he has no immediate plans to apply for bail while awaiting information from the police investigation.

The 21-year-old’s next court date is scheduled for July 5.
