The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are investigating after a security guard reportedly heard gunshots fired in their direction in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

The incident occurred around 2:50 a.m. along the Holt Main Road near Waters Road, about one kilometre up from Holt 97, according to RCMP.

The security guard, who works for forestry company Mosaic, told police that they saw two black vehicles with large off-road tires parked at a T-junction in the area.

When the security guard approached the cars, they heard the gunshots fired in their direction.

No one was injured in the incident and the vehicles left the scene.

Police say they were unable to locate the cars, and the area was closed on Christmas Day so investigators could review the scene.

“As the investigation progressed, police determined this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing risk to the public,” said RCMP in a release Friday.

Mounties are asking any witnesses of the incident to come forward. Anyone with information or video of the area early Christmas Eve is asked to call the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522.
