Motorcyclist dies after reportedly running red light in Nanaimo: police

A 34-year-old motorcyclist who was taken to hospital after a collision with an SUV in Nanaimo Thursday evening has died from his injuries, RCMP say.

According to police, the collision occurred at around 8:55 p.m. at the Aulds Road and Nanaimo Parkway (Highway 19) intersection. After speaking to witnesses, investigators determined that the motorcyclist was driving south along the shoulder of the Nanaimo Parkway when he went through a red light and was hit by an SUV going west on Aulds Road. Police said the SUV was driven by a 17-year-old who remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Nanaimo RCMP said the driver of the SUV was not injured but “was left traumatized by the collision.”  Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services is assisting the driver of the SUV.

The intersection and the highway were closed for several hours after the collision.

The motorcyclist’s family has been notified and his name has not been released at this time. Police said this is the third fatality this year in Nanaimo and the first involving a motorcycle.
