The steel for the Johnson Street Bridge arrives in Victoria on Aug. 22.

As work continues on the much-delayed new Johnson Street bridge, a marine channel will be closed on Saturday.

Starting at 11 a.m., the marine channel under the current Johnson Street Bridge will be closed for approximately six hours.

During that time, the crane barge that brought over the first shipment of steel from Vancouver will unload two machinery pieces called span drives into the bascule pier. The city said the bascule pier includes hydraulic motors that will raise and lower the new bridge.

The current bridge will still be open for vehicles, bikes and pedestrians.
