A Comox Valley man who admitted to masturbating in front of young girls and multiple women has been sentenced to 31 days in jail and two years of probation.
The 21-year-old man pleaded guilty to two counts of committing an indecent act in a public place and one count of exposing his genitals to someone under the age of 16 for incidents that took place in August.
The morning of Aug. 12, Comox Valley RCMP said they received two separate reports of indecent exposures. Women contacted RCMP after walking on a path in Courtenay’s Idiens Park when they said the man passed by on a bicycle, exposing himself and masturbating in front of them.
Later that day, police say the man did the same thing to a pair of young girls walking on a path parallel to Sheraton Road at Cummings Road.
Then on Aug. 14, a woman reported being followed by the man after he exposed himself at a Comox intersection. Police contained the area and arrested the man with help from a police dog.
Investigators provided evidence to link the man to all three incidents and he pleaded guilty in Nanaimo Provincial Court.
“The collaboration between our frontline members, police dog services, community members, and our major crime investigators facilitated a quick resolution to these incidents,” said Comox Valley RCMP Major Crime Unit’s Cpl. Matt Holst, in a statement. “We hope that this provides some resolution to all involved and wish to thank the public for their assistance.”
In addition to his 31-day sentence, which is in addition to time already served, the man will be on probation for two years and required to complete treatment and counselling programs, RCMP said.
He’ll also have to give a DNA sample that will be added to the National DNA Databank.
