The Port Alberni RCMP say its major crimes unit is investigating after a man died following a serious assault last month.

Police say they received a report of a man being attacked with a weapon on Aug. 7 in the 3600-block of 4th Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found the 33-year-old victim suffering from “significant injuries.”

Paramedics took the man to hospital for treatment of his injuries. He later died of his injuries on Aug. 21, according to RCMP.

Police say a suspect in the assault, 44-year-old Jonathan Womacks, was charged for the attack on Aug. 18.

He was initially charged with aggravated assault, but on Sept. 1 the charge was upgraded to second degree murder after the victim died.

Womacks remains in police custody Wednesday and is awaiting a court appearance. None of the charges have been proven in court.

“The Port Alberni RCMP is dedicated to ensuring these crimes are investigated to the fullest extent, and ensuring the safety of the public,” said Const. Richard Johns of the Port Alberni RCMP in a release Wednesday.
