A man has been arrested after a string of mail thefts from Greater Victoria apartments.

The suspect had broken into eight different apartment buildings in Greater Victoria since July 4 targeting mailboxes in lobby areas, according to Saanich Police. They say video surveillance was available for many of the thefts and was shared by Crime Stoppers.

Just over a month later on Aug. 6, the man was arrested after a witness saw a person who looked like the suspect’s description walking through Uptown Shopping Centre, according to police.

An officer located, arrested and was able to confirm the 45-year-old Nanaimo man was the person they were looking for, according to Saanich Police. They say the stolen items contained personal information, possibly for identity theft to commit thefts and frauds.

Police say the man has a lengthy criminal history of similar incidents.

They say he was later released on conditions, with a court date and recommended charges related to break and enter and possession of stolen property.
