A man was arrested by Victoria Police after he allegedly broke two large glass doors to a multi-unit residential building and threatened occupants of the building with a hammer in the 700-block of Herald Street.

Victoria Police says a man was arrested Thursday after breaking two large glass doors of an apartment building, and threatened occupants of the building with a hammer.

Police say shortly before 7 p.m., officers were called to the 700-block of Herald Street for the well-being of a man.

A woman reported a man was acting in a paranoid manner on the street, and was indicating people were trying to harm him.

Vic-PD says the man’s behaviour escalated and the woman moved to the lobby of a multi-unit residential building nearby.

The glass doors to the building were locked by apartment staff and the suspect then brandished a hammer.

Police say he smashed through the glass doors to gain entry into the building.

Vic-PD says the suspect then chased three women who ran from the lobby.

The man was arrested shortly after officers arrived.

He was taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries from the glass and a a mental health assessment.

Victoria Police says the victims were not physically injured.

The investigation continues into this incident and Vic-PD says charges of mischief over $5,000 and assault with a weapon are under consideration.
