Steven Michael Bacon has been charged in the first-degree murder of Makayla Chang.

A court appearance for the man accused in the 2017 murder of Nanaimo teenager Makayla Chang is scheduled for Friday, September 18.

The provincial court online registry says 60-year-old Steven Michael Bacon is set to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court at 11 a.m.

Nanaimo RCMP announced earlier this month Bacon was charged with first degree murder of Makayla Chang.

The 16-year-old was last seen on March 17, 2017, and it was nearly two months later when Makayla’s body was recovered.

Police identified Bacon as a person of interest in August last year.

He was arrested last September in Fredericton on unrelated charges.

When police announced the first degree murder charge against Bacon, he was still in Thunder Bay, Ontario, after being arrested in January for unrelated charges.

Chang’s family said they were very pleased after they were informed a murder charge had been laid.
