Makayla Chang went missing in March 2017 and was later found dead.

The man considered a person of interest in the murder of Nanaimo teenager Makayla Chang has now been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death.

Steven Bacon, 60,  is facing one charge of first-degree murder in the death of 16-year-old Makayla Chang, according to Nanaimo RCMP.

Police say the charge comes following an investigation that involved assistance from private citizens, businesses and various investigative and police agencies throughout Canada.

Chang was reported missing in March 2017 and her body was later recovered from an undisclosed location in May of that year.

Bacon was considered a person of interest early in the investigation by the police. He was arrested last September in Fredericton on unrelated charges. In August 2019, the RCMP had asked for the public’s help to find Bacon.

“Makayla’s family and the community of Nanaimo and of Vancouver Island as a whole have been greatly affected by the loss of this young life.  Hopefully, this charge can assist with providing answers and bringing a degree of resolution to Makayla’s family,” Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien said in a press release.

Bacon’s first court appearance for the murder charge has not been scheduled.

Steven Michael Bacon has been charged in the first-degree murder of Makayla Chang.
