A local resident has donated an $8,000 Duckana statue to the City of Victoria, and consultation is about to begin on where it should be displayed.

Geoff de Ruiter, who donated the statue, says the hype around Duckana’s in July brought the city together and he wanted that joy to continue.

“Duckana, also known as Ducknana, brought so much joy to the city and for all ages,” de Ruiter said in a written statement. “It was at a time when I felt we needed something to distract us, or better yet, bring us together! I thought we should memorialize that moment. I hope people rub its beak for good health and it stays really shiny!”

Coun. Jeremy Caradonna says he was happy to accept the donation from de Ruiter and hopes that a prominent location is chosen to display the Duckana.

“Victoria is well known for both its ducks and for being bananas sometimes, so we’re really pleased that Geoff had decided to generously offer this bronze statue to the city, which will be enjoyed by citizens and visitors for generations to come,” Caradonna said. “I’m just glad the city didn’t have to foot the bill!”

While de Ruiter says he is open to any locations that the consultation lands on, he’s hoping it will be displayed in Beacon Hill, outside City Hall, or fixed to the centre plaza by Johnson, Pandora, and the bridge.

As consultation gets underway, de Ruiter has an important message for anyone who plans to partake.

“April Fools!”
