Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the appointment of Janet Austin as the next Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Tuesday morning.

Austin is replacing Judith Guichon and will take over the position in the coming weeks.

Austin, who has served as the chief executive officer of the YWCA Metro Vancouver since 2003, will be the province’s 30th lieutenant governor.

In a statement, the prime minister’s office said Austin is an “active member of various local and national organizations, including the Board of Directors of Translink and the City of Vancouver’s Health City for All Leadership Table.”

“Ms. Austin is an outstanding leader who has dedicated her career to improving the lives of others,” Trudeau said in a statement.

“I know she will work hard to represent the province, and its people, well.”

Trudeau thanked Guishon for her work “to engage communities, non-profit organizations, and businesses across the province.”

Guishon held the position since 2012.

Lieutenant governors serve as the Queen’s representative in their provinces and fulfil her roles and functions.

Those include granting royal assent to provincial laws.

Lieutenant governors serve at least five-year terms.
