Public invited to Governor General ceremony at B.C. Legislature

WATCH: A special welcome ceremony in Victoria on Tuesday marks Gov. Gen. Julie Payette’s first official visit to British Columbia.

Canada’s new Governor General will make first official visit to British Columbia on Tuesday.

To mark the occasion, a special welcoming ceremony will be held outside the Parliament Buildings Tuesday afternoon and the public is invited to attend.

Premier John Horgan will welcome Her Excellency the Right Hon. Julie Payette at at 2 p.m.

After a traditional First Nations welcome, the ceremony will include the Naden Band, an honour guard from Maritime Forces Pacific with more than 100 members, and a 21-gun salute.

The Governor General will then meet with veterans inside, in the Upper Rotunda, and sign B.C.’s distinguished visitor’s book in the Lower Rotunda before a private meeting with the premier.

Payette is Canada’s 29th Governor General since Confederation. The former astronaut was sworn in last October.
