Island Health declares two new healthcare outbreaks; one declared over

Island Health has declared two new outbreaks of COVID-19 in healthcare facilities in Nanaimo, and one in Victoria has been declared over.

One is at Woodgrove Manor long-term care home with two residents who have tested positive.

The second is on the fourth floor general medicine unit at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

In a statement, Island Health says this is a separate outbreak from the one on the fifth floor, which was declared on Jan. 25. The new outbreak is contained to the fourth floor.

The health authority says it remains safe to go to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, and people should not delay seeking emergency care if it is needed.

The following measures have been implemented at these sites:

  • Social visits will be paused on outbreak units. Essential visits will continue;
  • No congregate dining or group activities;
  • Staff movement will be limited wherever possible;
  • Enhanced cleaning and infection control measures will continue;
  • Additional housekeeping support is being brought in;
  • Patients, families and staff are being notified;
  • Enhanced screening of all staff and patients for symptoms.

In Victoria, the outbreak at Sunrise of Victoria long-term care home has been declared over.

One resident and one staff member were identified in this outbreak, which was declared on Jan. 19.
