Nanaimo RCMP lay charges in Aug. 1 shooting

Nanaimo RCMP say charges have been laid for a shooting which left one 43-year-old man with life-threatening injuries.

Around 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 1, RCMP were called to the area of Northfield Road and Nanaimo Parkway after several drivers reported seeing a person laying on the highway.

Witnesses provided first aid for an apparent gunshot wound until paramedics arrived.

The man was brought to the hospital, then later airlifted to a hospital in Victoria.

Investigators were able to find the suspect, 48-year-old Robert Allen Estes, within 20 minutes of the reported shooting and was taken into custody without incident.

Estes has since been charged with one count of attempted murder and is being held in police custody until his court appearance on Aug. 11 in Nanaimo Provincial Court.

Additionally, RCMP with the assistance of police dogs have located the firearm near Northfield and Boxwood Road.

The firearm will undergo a forensic examination, and an investigation into the matter is continuing.
