India reports more than 90,000 new COVID-19 cases in one day

According to the World Health Organization, India reported 90,632 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of reported cases in the country to 4.11 million. 

India has recorded a staggering number of new COVID-19 cases.

According to the World Health Organization, India reported 90,632 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of reported cases in the country to 4.11 million.

It’s the highest single-day increase of new cases ever recorded and comes after the country broke the record the previous day when it reported 86,432 new cases.

The Indian state of Maharashtra, which has a population of more than 110 million people in an area roughly the size of Newfoundland and Labrador, reported 23,350 new cases according to The Indian Express.

As a result, India has surpassed Brazil for the second-most reported COVID-19 cases in the world since the pandemic began, data available on the World Health Organization’s website shows.

India also recorded 1,065 new deaths from the virus in the past 24 hours, the most of any nation. The country has consistently reported more than 50,000 new cases a day for weeks and surpassed the 3 million mark for total number of new cases just 14 days ago.

Globally, there were 294,533 new cases reported in the past 24 hours, according to WHO, with India’s figures representing 30 per cent of all new cases reported worldwide.

Brazil record 51,194 new cases, the second-most of any country in the past 24 hours, followed by the United States (49,131 new cases), Argentina (10,684 new cases), Colombia (8,488 new cases), France (8,390 new cases), Peru (6,703 new cases), Mexico (6,196 new cases), Russia (5,195 new cases), and Iraq (4,644 new cases).

The number of new cases reported in India, Brazil, and the United States represents 65 per cent of all new cases in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Canada, according to WHO, reported just 631 new cases and no new deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of recorded cases to 131,124.
