British Columbia’s police watchdog has been notified following an incident in Campbell River.

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) about an incident on July 26 in Campbell River that saw a man taken to hospital with a “possible broken arm” following an altercation involving police.

According to a media release, RCMP officers attended a property that had been the subject of a noise complaint and encountered three intoxicated individuals, one of whom became combative.

Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but a physical altercation ensued and police were eventually able to handcuff the man and transported him to cells.

Emergency Health Services were contacted but would not deal with the man because he was aggressive, the release notes.

Roughly two hours after the man brought to police holding cells, he complained of pain and was taken to hospital where it was determined that he had a “possible fractured arm.”

As a result, the IIO BC says it is now investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s injury.

BC RCMP said no further information will be released about the incident because the matter is currently being investigated by the IIO BC.

IIO BC is a civilian-led police oversight agency responsible for investigations into incidents of death or serious harm that may have been the result of the actions of a police officer, whether on or off duty.
