As work continues on the Malahat (Trans-Canada Highway), drivers are advised of shifting lanes and temporary lane markers starting Wednesday.

Traffic will start to shift into temporary alignments that will be in place around the clock until mid-May.

Crews will be lowering the existing grade of the highway at two locations near Aspen Road and to replace a culvert under the highway south of McCurdy Road.

Drivers should expect up to 20-minute delays and intermittent stoppages to allow for blasting work to be done.

Stoppages will happen from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and outside peak commuter times during the day from Monday through Thursday.

Drivers are asked to obey the construction speed zone of 60 kilometres-per-hour and watch for workers and traffic controllers.

The Highway 1 Malahat Village Safety Improvement between Victoria and Duncan include expanding five kilometres of highway to four lanes with wider shoulders, installing three kilometres of median barrier and providing improved and safer highway access through a frontage and backage road system with a new turnaround facility, and improved overhead lighting at intersections to help ensure safer access on and off the highway.
