Police determine suspicious package in downtown Victoria not a threat

WATCH: Some tense moments in downtown Victoria Tuesday afternoon. Police were called to the CRA building after a suspicious package was found outside of the building. Tess van Straaten reports.

Victoria police have determined a suspicious package found at a federal government building in downtown Victoria is not a threat.

Victoria police evacuated the Canada Revenue Agency’s Vancouver Island Tax Services Office at 1415 Vancouver Street and closed sections of Vancouver and Johnson streets at around 2:00 p.m. while they investigated a report of a suspicious package.

A bomb-response robot from the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team was deployed to the scene. The robot was used to determine the package was not a treat.

The reported suspicious package in downtown Victoria on April 3, 2018, appeared to be an red backpack underneath a tax return drop-off box.

Police said a person did see a bag left by an unknown woman and officers later confirmed the package was a red backpack that contained personal items. It was left under a tax return drop-off box. No charges are being considered.
