Nanaimo RCMP and Nanaimo Fire Rescue are investigating after a fire heavily damaged a gym in the city’s downtown area.
The fire at the Franklyn Sreet heritage building was reported at 12:31 a.m. this morning. Flames could be seen shooting through part of the roof before firefighters were able to put the fire out.
Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause but say it’s suspicious. The file has been turned over to Nanaimo RCMP.
The building is owned by the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District.
The Franklyn Street Gymnasium has been in continuous use as a gymnasium and auditorium since 1922.
The website HistoricPlaces.ca that lists buildings with heritage value says the building “is a good example of a utilitarian, institutional building with some Classical Revival elements.”
