A candle and a bouquet of dried flowers sit on the stoop of a downtown Victoria business, where friends and family say 30-year-old John Dickinson was stabbed to death early Tuesday morning.

“He was a hard-working man who loved to work and loved to play,” said John’s sister Jasmine Bauer on GoFundMe. “He didn’t deserve this and I know he will be missed by so many.”

Bauer went on to describe Dickinson as a goofy, silly, laid-back kind of guy.

“Johnny would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it,” said Bauer.

Other friends told CHEK News that Dickinson was the ‘nicest guy on this entire planet.’

“He was the kind of guy who’d do anything for his friends and family, loved playing pool and the Leafs. I wish I could even spend one day living like Johnny,” said Jeff.

The same night Dickinson was murdered, police arrested a male suspect. He’s still in custody, but more than 36 hours following the fatal stabbing, no charges have been laid.

“The accused in this homicide investigation who was arrested early Tuesday morning will be before the courts this afternoon for a breach of a release order related to a separate matter,” said Cst. Cam MacIntyre with Victoria Police.

As for other important details like the suspect’s identity and prior charges, Vic PD says they’re choosing to remain quiet to preserve the integrity of the investigation and potential prosecution.

“We’re going to continue to go through this to put together a significant file do to right by our community and the victim’s family,” said MacIntyre.

Dickinson’s family is trying to raise money through Go Fund with the hopes of bringing his body back to Ontario to his Mother.
