Victoria Police officers apprehended a man experiencing a mental health crisis who had barricaded himself into an apartment building on Quadra Street on Tuesday afternoon.
In a release, VicPD says officers were called to the 2500-block of Quadra Street around 1:30 p.m. for a report of a man in a mental health crisis who was reported to be at risk of becoming violent.

When officers arrived, VicPD says the man refused to talk so the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT), including Crisis Negotiators, were deployed to the scene and worked for several hours to the negotiate a surrender with the man.
After several hours of unsuccessful communication attempts, GVERT officers deployed a loud distraction device and irritant gas into the suite.
Police say the man then “encountered officers with improvised weapons.”
Officers deployed Arwen less-lethal plastic projectiles, and the man continued to refuse to surrender.
The man was taken into police custody shortly after 7 p.m., and he was transported to hospital to treat non-life-threatening injuries and a mental health assessment.
