Ryan Painter, the board chair of the Greater Victoria School Board, has announced he does not intend to seek re-election in the upcoming election.

General local elections, which include school board a municipal government, will be held on October 15.

In a post on Twitter, Painter said he is proud of the work he has achieved during his time on the school board.

“I’m particularly proud of approving a new strategic plan that has culturally responsive learning environments as a core principle,” Painter said.

“We also put significant focus in our strategic plan on student mental health and wellbeing, one of the key policy priorities for me when I ran in 2018, including building a mental health framework.”

Painter highlighted some of the key projects the district completed recently as part of work he is proud of.

“I am proud of standing up for the 2SLGBTQ+ community and championing SOGI123, fighting to preserve Victor School as a specialized school for our most medically vulnerable students, bringing the name change for George Jay Elementary to the Board, pushing for a study of the impacts of school liaison officers in our district, advocating successfully for free and easy access to menstrual products in our schools, and advocating provincially for neurodiverse youth, increased capital funding, and safe routes to schools.”

Painter says he plans to continue to work with local non-profit organizations in areas to provide economic opportunities for vulnerable community members, de-stigmatizing mental health, and promoting a circular economy.
