Earthquake Canada says an earthquake occurred around 190 km from Port Hardy on June 13. (Earthquakes Canada)

An earthquake occurred around 190 kilometres from Port Hardy Monday morning, and a spokesperson from Earthquakes Canada says due to the magnitude and location no impacts are expected.

John Cassidy, says the earthquake was measured at 4.6 magnitude, and occurred around 10:34 a.m.

He said there have not yet been any reports that it was felt.

“We’ve had no reports of it being felt, or felt shaking anywhere,” Cassidy said. “Certainly wouldn’t expect any impacts from this earthquake there would be no tsunami genereated, no damage would be expected.”

According to Cassidy, the magnitude of the earthquake may change as more data about it is received, but it is not expected to exceed a 4.9 magnitude.

Cassidy says the region gets between five to 10 earthquakes of this magnitude per year, but that it serves as a good reminder to be prepared since the Island is an active earthquake zone.

“It’s a good reminder of the active plate tectonics of our coasts, the slow and relentless movements of these of these tectonic plates that are moving at the same speed that your fingernails grow,” Cassidy said.

“These earthquakes are always a good reminder that this is an active earthquake zone and being prepared is really important.”

Emergency Management BC has guides on how to make emergency plans for your family, with guides geared for people with various extra considerations including people with disabilities, seniors, and households with pets.

Additionally, it is recommended to have an emergency kit that includes non-perishable food, water, a first-aid kit, and other supplies.
