A fundraising effort has started for the woman who was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash that closed Highway 1 near Goldstream Park for much of last Thursday.

A GoFundMe page has been established for Kayla-Marie Gibson, with a goal to raise $5,000 in support of the 19-year-old’s recovery in the hospital.

The page says Gibson has broken legs, hip, pelvis and knees.

The investigation continues into what caused the crash between the white courier van and a fuel truck on the highway at Finlayson Arm Road, just before 11 a.m.

The woman driving the van was rushed to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, while the truck driver was treated for minor injuries.

The highway was not reopened in both directions until early Friday morning, more than 13 hours after the collision.

In the aftermath of the lengthy closure, Island businesses relying on the main connector between the south and mid-Island said an alternate route is critical for the Malahat going forward.
