A service is being held this afternoon for a Port Alberni RCMP officer who died unexpectedly while off-duty Feb. 23.
The funeral for Cst. Douglas Rentz will be held at the Alberni Athletic Hall on Roger Street in Port Alberni, starting at 2 p.m.
An obituary on the Dignity Memorial funeral home’s website says Rentz is survived by his wife and two daughters, along with his mother, two brothers and two nephews.
He was 41.
Rentz was born in Campbell River in 1977 and is remembered for always helping others, and was “very handy and a jack-of-all-trades.”
He began an electrical career at the age of 19, and for five years Rentz was an auxiliary police officer in Campbell River.
Rentz achieved his goal of becoming an RCMP officer in 2010 when he graduated from its training academy in Regina.
